Leipzig Day 1

The train trip to Leipzig is quick, but we arrive to find that we can’t check in to our hotel for two hours. We leave our bags and go for a walk through an amazing old town, one of the prettiest I’ve ever seen. Everywhere you look is another church, town hall, or simply a cool looking building. We walk through the markets, full of stalls selling bratwurst, fish, chocolate, bread, etc. There’s a bar with outside seating and a stage where, all through our stay, a revolving cast of some fairly terrible musicians were playing. Even better than the outside space is the arcades – mere shopping malls, but decorated as well as anything you could expect to see, in renaissance or modernist styles. Simply beautiful, and worth wandering through in their own right. We finish with a walk through the park and back to the hotel, before spending the afternoon relaxing. We finish by walking south of the old town, to the bar and club area. An interesting mix, the highlight for me is the Irish bar named, Killywillys. We eat a fantastic Turkish meal at Efes, taking a long time to order because the staff don’t speak English and are trying to explain to us that some things aren’t available.
