Library fines way up in Wellington

From my friend Mark Greening’s blog, Greening Wellington City, I learn that library fines are increasing significantly in my home town of Wellington – just after local elections.

Adult book fine goes up from $0.60 to $0.80 per day (33% increase).
Child and young adult dvd fines go up from $0.50 to $0.80 per day (60% increase).

The Council is apparently blaming the increase in Goods and Services Tax, but GST only went up 2.5%.

These fines look really high to me – in the UK, I pay about £0.10 per day – equivalent to about $0.20 NZ.
