New Zealand: transfer of National Library to Department of Internal Affairs

The draft legislation enabling the abolition of the National Library as an independent entity has been published. The National Library (and Archives NZ) will be amalgamated into the Department of Internal Affairs. See the State Sector Management Bill (PDF, 52 pages). Page 6 onwards summarise the changes being made to the National Library of New Zealand (Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa) Act 2003.

The Government’s goal with these changes is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the state sector, and the Government has stated that the statutory roles of the National Librarian (and Chief Archivist) will be protected.
